U.S. service members have sustained a substantial number of lower extremity injuries from recent military conflicts, leading to amputations or limb preservation procedures. These procedures are associated with a high incidence of falls, which have detrimental effects on service members. Existing research on balance improvement and fall prevention is insufficient, particularly for young, active populations like service members who have experienced limb loss or lower-limb prosthetics. This research sought to close the existing knowledge gap regarding fall prevention training for service members with lower extremity trauma, by (1) monitoring fall rates, (2) assessing improvements in trunk control, and (3) determining skill retention at three and six months post-training intervention.
A study cohort of 45 individuals, composed of 40 males, with an average age of 348 years and standard deviation unspecified, having lower extremity trauma, consisting of 20 individuals with unilateral transtibial amputations, 6 individuals with unilateral transfemoral amputations, 5 individuals with bilateral transtibial amputations, and 14 individuals with unilateral lower extremity procedures, were enrolled. A microprocessor-controlled treadmill was employed to generate task-specific postural disturbances mimicking a stumble. Over two weeks, the training schedule included six, thirty-minute sessions. The participant's growth in ability resulted in a proportional rise in the challenges presented by the task. The training program's effectiveness was assessed through data collection strategies: prior to training (baseline, duplicated), immediately post-training (0 month), and at three and six months after the training period. A clinical trial, randomized and double-armed, was performed. Patients with partial tooth loss, selected consecutively, were randomly allocated to the dCAIS or standard freehand approach intervention groups. To determine the accuracy of implant placement, the preoperative and postoperative Cone Beam Computed Tomography (CBCT) scans were overlaid, and linear deviations at the implant apex and platform (in millimeters), as well as angular deviations (in degrees), were measured. Self-reported metrics of satisfaction, pain, and quality of life were collected via questionnaires before, during and after surgical procedures.
Thirty patients (with a count of 22 implants each) were admitted to each respective treatment group.
